A competitive, circular Europe: with or without plastics?

On 20th November, PCEP joined CEFLEX, EuPC, Vinyl Plus, PRE, Plastics Europe, and EUMEPS at the European Parliament in Brussels, to explore the vital intersection of competitiveness, circularity, and sustainability for Europe’s plastics sector.

Competitiveness is shaping up to be the key question of this mandate - how can EU policy-makers boost Europe’s economic and industrial prowess, whilst supporting sustainability and circularity?

In this event it was discussed how Europe can further solidify its leadership in advancing circularity, and what innovations in the plastics industry are driving sustainable practices to reduce environmental impact. How does a strong, interconnected value chain contribute to boosting Europe’s global competitiveness and the resilience of its industry? And how can the relationship between the plastics industry and policymakers be strengthened to address regulatory challenges?

By addressing regulatory challenges and promoting cooperation, the event aimed to position Europe as the benchmark for a sustainable and competitive future.

With EU competitiveness taking center stage in this mandate, the event brought together MEPs, policymakers, and industry leaders to debate the path forward. How can Europe enhance its economic and industrial strength while advancing circularity and minimizing environmental impact? The conversation addressed:

  • Benefits and Impact: How the plastics sector contributes to Europe’s sustainable economic future.

  • Circularity and Innovation: Leading the charge on sustainable practices that foster a circular economy.

  • Collaboration Across the Value Chain: Strengthening partnerships to enhance resilience.

  • Policy & Regulatory Impact: Navigating opportunities and challenges posed by EU regulations.
